Boba Fett’s Infamous Father Gets a Brand New Solo Series in Star Wars: Jango Fett #1

With the limited amount of screentime he had in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Jango Fett hasn’t had much to go on aside from a limited series, a one-shot from Dark Horse Comics, and a one-shot from Marvel Comics. Attack of the Clones portrayed a ferocious and feared bounty hunter without going into much depth on how or why he became such a person. The audience just knew he was the infamous bounty hunter, Boba Fett’s father.

While he did get some recognition in his Legends counterpart, the new canon hasn’t given much information on Jango’s history before he died in the Battle of Geonosis. In the new series, Star Wars: Jango Fett #1, by writer Ethan Sacks with artist Luke Ross, fans get a glimpse into Fett’s life years before the Clone Wars.

Jango Fett Remains the Galaxy’s Most Dangerous Bounty Hunter

The first few panels of the comic show how Jango Fett remains a lethal and ruthless bounty hunter in an action-packed scene in a secret gambling den on the planet, Oosalon. He finds his target, Fissark Tozan, who owes Sabaac money to the Crymorah Syndicates. However, he is met with hostility and retaliation by Tozan’s allies. Jango doesn’t hesitate to take each of them down in a classical gun battle and takes off with Tozan.

The ominous dialogue by Jango Fett alongside the superbly drawn art of each panel keeps the reader at the edge of their seat with action that mimics the opening scene of The Mandalorian Season I. Considering Jango Fett has somewhat adopted the Mandalorian heritage, he is as dangerous and ruthless as they come. The sequence alone defines Jango’s character when it comes to a bounty he is determined to claim.

Jango Fett #1 Features the State of the Galaxy Years Before the Clone Wars

While Jango Fett is out and about in the underworld, in the regional headquarters of the planet, Jaloria, citizens are about to witness a peace between two species who have been at war with one another for some time, the Nautolans and the Anselmi. The Republic, with the support of Chancellor Valorum, used a relic known as the Hope of Glee Anselm that was created by both the Nautolans and the Anselmi before their conflict to symbolize the harmony between the two and unite them together again. The ceremony was interrupted by mysterious armored individuals who sought to steal the relic. Unfortunately, they succeeded.

With the relic gone, the hope of peace between the two seems uncertain and distant as there are no leads to the stolen artifact. In desperate need of help, they seek the aid of Jango Fett to look for it and bring it back. After delivering his bounty, Jango Fett’s ship is bombarded by thieves wearing the same armor in the heist for the Hope of Glee Anselm. In addition, before Jango took them down, one shouted “For Glee Anselm”. A hint that they are possibly working for the Anselmi. The reason why has yet to be revealed.

Jango Fett #1 is a Classic Star Wars Storytelling Experience

Much like how Episode II: Attack of the Clones started as a mystery, so does Jango Fett #1. In a state of galactic peace with the occasional disturbance, like the conflict between the Nautolans and the Anselmi, Jango Fett is brought on the scene to hunt. It does have its similarities to Episode II by involving a bounty hunter during a dispute that has yet to reveal answers to what is happening in the galaxy in the years before The Phantom Menace. It sure is to be a wild ride.

While it’s not a groundbreaking story, Jango Fett #1 starts strong with a decent plot, great art, and an accurate interpretation of Jango Fett. It doesn’t dive deep into his character or reveal anything major about his past but it’s clear that it’s just a simple story trying to make its way to the new canon, giving Jango Fett somewhat more history before the events of Attack of the Clones. The first issue is just beginning. The story continues in issue # 2, coming April 24, 2024.

Jango Fett #1 is available by Marvel Comics wherever comics are sold.
