Everything You Need To Know About Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Mad Max: Fury Road introduced the legendary imperator and fan-favorite character, Furiosa, amazingly played by Charlize Theron. After 9 years since its release in theaters, director George Miller comes back to direct the prequel to Fury Road, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a young Furiosa and Chris Hemsworth as newcomer villain, Dr. Dementus. While not much is known about the story itself, what is known is that this film will explore the origins of Furiosa before she became an imperator under Immortan Joe and her life as one, which in turn leads to her eventual betrayal in Fury Road, where she rescues 5 women known as The Five Wives, from Immortan Joe.

The Mad Max saga is expanding into a larger universe with spin-offs like Furiosa, and the director and creator of Furiosa and the Mad Max series, George Miller, is showing no signs of slowing down. The series began with Mad Max (1979), and spawned two sequels, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), and Miller’s “revisiting” of the franchise, Mad Max: Fury Road. Furiosa takes a step into the larger post-apocalyptic world by telling the origins of one of Immortan Joe’s imperators. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming film.

Who Is Imperator Furiosa?

Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, first appeared in George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road, where she serves under Immortan Joe, a ruthless dictator who harnesses much of the world’s natural resources and exploits them for his nefarious means. Furiosa would inevitably betray him by rescuing his supposed wives known as The 5 Wives, who were all held against their will so they could give birth to a healthy heir for Immortan Joe. While her strength allowed them to escape from his grasp, her leadership and compassion kept them bravely together. Though Fury Road gave hints and clues to Furiosa’s past such as The Green Place, her home, and The Vuvalini, her people, her backstory remained a shroud in the Mad Max saga.

The latest entry in the Mad Max universe will give more background into what exactly The Green Place is, who The Vuvalini, also known as The Many Mothers, are, and where Furiosa fits into their culture and background. Her mother, Mary Jo Basa, played by Charlee Fraser who is also mentioned in Fury Road, will play a pivotal role in the person, the warrior woman, Furiosa becomes in her journey to the Wasteland as she faces her captor, Dr. Dementus.
